Comprehensive Experimental Analysis of Handcrafted Descriptors for Face Recognition

2018

Over the past few decades, LBP descriptor, which shown its high robustness in extracting discriminative features from an image, has been successfully applied in diverse challenging computer vision applications including face recognition. The efficiency and usability of the LBP operator and its success in various real world applications has inspired the development of much new powerful LBP variants. Indeed, after the appearance of the LBP operator, several renowned extensions and modifications of LBP have been proposed in the literature to the point that it can be difficult to recognize their respective LBP-related strategies, strengths and weaknesses according to a given application, and th…

Internet of Things with Deep Learning-Based Face Recognition Approach for Authentication in Control Medical Systems

2022

Internet of Things (IoT) with deep learning (DL) is drastically growing and plays a significant role in many applications, including medical and healthcare systems. It can help users in this field get an advantage in terms of enhanced touchless authentication, especially in spreading infectious diseases like coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Even though there is a number of available security systems, they suffer from one or more of issues, such as identity fraud, loss of keys and passwords, or spreading diseases through touch authentication tools. To overcome these issues, IoT-based intelligent control medical authentication systems using DL models are proposed to enhance the security f…

The integration of visual context information in facial emotion recognition in 5- to 15-year-olds.

2016

International audience; The current study investigated the role of congruent visual context information in the recognition of facial emotional expression in 190 participants from 5 to 15 years of age. Children performed a matching task that presented pictures with different facial emotional expressions (anger, disgust, happiness, fear, and sadness) in two conditions: with and without a visual context. The results showed that emotions presented with visual context information were recognized more accurately than those presented in the absence of visual context. The context effect remained steady with age but varied according to the emotion presented and the gender of participants. The findin…

A Data Association Algorithm for People Re-Identification in Photo Sequences

2010

In this paper, a new system is presented to support the user in the face annotation task. Every time a photo sequence becomes available, the system analyses it to detect and cluster faces in set corresponding to the same person. We propose to model the problem of people re-identification in photos as a data association problem. In this way, the system takes advantage from the assumption that each person can appear at most once in each photo. We propose a fully automated method for grouping facial images, the method does not require any initialization neither a priori knowledge of the number of persons that are in the photo sequence. We compare the results obtained with our method and with s…

Holistic processing and reliance on global viewing strategies in older adults' face perception

2013

There is increasing evidence that face recognition might be impaired in older adults, but it is unclear whether the impairment is truly perceptual, and face specific. In order to address this question we compared performance in same/different matching tasks with face and non-face objects (watches) among young (mean age 23.7) and older adults (mean age 70.4) using a context congruency paradigm (Meinhardt-Injac, Persike & Meinhardt, 2010, Meinhardt-Injac, Persike and Meinhardt, 2011a). Older adults were less accurate than young adults with both object classes, while face matching was notably impaired. Effects of context congruency and inversion, measured as the hallmarks of holistic processin…

Time-resolved classification of dog brain signals reveals early processing of faces, species and emotion

2020

Dogs process faces and emotional expressions much like humans, but the time windows important for face processing in dogs are largely unknown. By combining our non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) protocol on dogs with machine-learning algorithms, we show category-specific dog brain responses to pictures of human and dog facial expressions, objects, and phase-scrambled faces. We trained a support vector machine classifier with spatiotemporal EEG data to discriminate between responses to pairs of images. The classification accuracy was highest for humans or dogs vs. scrambled images, with most informative time intervals of 100–140 ms and 240–280 ms. We also detected a response sensitive…

Cardiac sympathetic activation and parasympathetic withdrawal during psychosocial stress exposure in 6‐month‐old infants

2020

Infant autonomic reactivity to stress is a potential predictor of later life health complications, but research has not sufficiently examined sympathetic activity, controlled for effects of physical activity and respiration, or studied associations among autonomic adjustments, cardiac activity, and affect in infants. We studied 278 infants during the repeated Still-Face Paradigm, a standardized stressor, while monitoring cardiac activity (ECG) and respiratory pattern (respiratory inductance plethysmography). Video ratings of physical activity and affect were also performed. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and T-wave amplitude (TWA) served as noninvasive indicators of cardiac parasympathe…

Recognition of briefly presented familiar and unfamiliar faces

2009

Early processing stages in the perception of familiar and unfamiliar faces were studied in four experiments by varying the type of available facial information in a four alternative forced choice recognition task. Both reaction time and recognition accuracy served as dependent measures. The observed data revealed an asymmetry in processing familiar and unfamiliar faces. A markedly weak inversion effect and strong blurring effect suggest a limited usage of spatial relations within early processing stages of unfamiliar faces. Recognition performance for whole familiar faces did not deteriorate due to blurring or the presentation of isolated internal features, suggesting a low level of represe…

Embedded System Study for Real Time Boosting Based Face Detection

2006

This paper describes a study for a real time embedded face detection system. Recently, the boosting based face detection algorithms proposed by [(Viola, P and Jone, M, 2001); (Lienhart, R, et al., 2003)] have gained a lot of attention and are considered as the fastest accurate face detection algorithms today. However, the embedded implementation of such algorithms into hardware is still a challenge, since these algorithms are heavily based on memory access. A sequential implementation model is built showing its lack of regularity in time consuming and speed of detection. We propose a parallel implementation that exploits the parallelism and the pipelining in these algorithms. This implement…

Face Processing on Low-Power Devices

2009

The research on embedded vision-based techniques is considered nowadays as one of the most interesting matters of computer vision. In this work we address the scenario in which a real-time face processing system is needed to monitor people walking through some locations. Some face detection (e.g., Viola-Jones face detector) and face recognition (e.g., eigenfaces) approaches have reached a certain level of maturity, so we focused on the development of such techniques on embedded systems taking into account both hardware and software constraints. Our goal is to detect the presence of some known individuals inside some sensitive areas producing a compact description of the observed people. Cap…
